What's the Difference Between an Indiana Mortgage Broker License and an Indiana Loan Officer License?
Are mortgage brokers and loan officers the same? Some people use the terms interchangeably, but the licenses actually are different. A mortgage broker license in Indiana authorizes an employer to set up shop. On the other hand, you will need an individual MLO license in Indiana to work at a broker office.
Cost of Getting Your Mortgage License in Indiana
When you’re ready to apply, be prepared to get out your checkbook or debit card. These are the processing fees for the components of your Indiana mortgage license application:
- $50 for the application
- $30 for processing
- $15 for the credit report
- $36.25 for the FBI check
You can’t get refunds for these, so take pre-tests from Mortgage Educators to be sure you will pass your NMLS exam.
PE Expiration Policy in Indiana
If you finish your 20 hours of education but don’t apply for your license for 3 years, you will lose your credit for completing those classes. You would have to retake them to get your license.
Your education credit can also expire if you let your license lapse and don’t renew it for 3 years. This national policy is now enforced in the state of Indiana.
Indiana Continuing Education Requirements
Every fall, start getting ready to renew your license. This is not a time for procrastination because there are strict deadlines for your renewal submission—and no reinstatement policy if you miss your deadline.
Renewal education takes 8 hours of classes:
-
3 on federal law
-
2 on ethics
-
2 on other types of mortgages
-
1 on an elective
Plan carefully so you submit your renewal application on time. Technically, the deadline is the last day of the year, but we strongly advise you to shoot for a completed submission by November 1. Don’t let any bureaucratic delays get in the way of your livelihood.
