Apply For Your NMLS Account and ID Number

The first step to obtaining your North Carolina mortgage license is applying for an NMLS account and ID number. To do so, go to the NMLS website.

     

Once you've created your NMLS account, it's time to complete your pre-license education. North Carolina requires 20 hours of NMLS-approved education and 4-hour state elective SAFE pre-licensure education.

North Carolina Mortgage License Education Requirements

Your North Carolina mortgage education requires instruction totaling 24 hours. The educational requirements are broken up into the following categories:

 

- consumer protection, fraud, fair lending, and ethics (3 hours)

- federal law (3 hours)

- non-traditional lending (2 hours)

- electives (12 hours)

What's the Difference Between a North Carolina Mortgage Broker License and a North Carolina Loan Officer License?

A loan officer helps clients get mortgages through the officer’s employer (a broker, bank, or financial institution) and needs a specific license to do so. In contrast, the term “mortgage broker” may either apply to the employer of several loan officers or to an independent loan specialist who connects customers with loans from several different possible lenders. Either way, brokers have different licensing requirements than loan officers to operate such a business.

 

 

Cost of Getting Your Mortgage License in North Carolina

 

North Carolina requires these fees to obtain a license:

 

- NMLS Initial Processing Fee: $30

- NC Application Fee: $125.00

- FBI Criminal Background Check: $36.25

- Credit Report: $15

 

 

PE Expiration Policy in North Carolina

If you have taken your 20 hours of pre-license education, this policy could require that you complete it again. This applies if you didn’t get your license for 3 years after completing the courses, or if it has been 3 years since you last completed the 20 hours of pre-licensing, even if your license has been active during that time.

 

North Carolina Continuing Education Requirements

Keeping your mortgage license in North Carolina requires you to obtain yearly continuing education. This means completing 8 general education hours a year, which must cover: ethics (2 hours), federal law (3 hours), non-traditional mortgages (2 hours), and North Carolina laws and regulations(1 hour).

 

North Carolina also requires a new criminal background check and credit check each year. You’ll pay a $125 renewal fee, a $125 reinstatement fee, and a $30 processing fee. Although the deadline for your renewal application is the last day of the year, it’s recommended you submit it by November 1 instead.
